Glasses To Project Images Directly Into Retina Terminator Style

Glasses To Project Images Directly Into Retina Terminator Style: "

rid-augmented-reality-vision

Brother Industries, Ltd. has just announced that next year it plans to produce Retinal Imaging Display (RID) glasses that augment regular vision. Just as in the popular Terminator movies, these glasses could project supplemental information into your field of vision to augment your normal vision. Although Brother and most of the blogosphere is hyping that the product will be ready by 2010, I am skeptical. Even if they do appear in 2010, will the quality and form factor of the glasses be reasonable? I doubt it. Augmented reality sent directly into our retinas is certainly on the horizon, and its going to be awesome…but the technology still needs several more years of innovation before it is ready to break out. In the meantime, we can wet our imaginations with what is to come.

So how do the RID glasses work anyway? For those that want to get more depth on how the whole RID thing works, a decent place to start seems to be available from the US Navy. Sadly the information from Brother is pretty thin, only adding to my skepticism of their product plan. The glasses are equipped with an attachment piece that literally projects light onto your retina. The light source for the eyepiece comes from a hard drive sized laser generator that you would have to carry on your hip or somewhere on your body. Brother claims that the images are transparent enough that they don’t interfere with the real visual field of what you are seeing.

augmented-reality-ridIt sounds great in theory, but does it really work as advertised and without complications? What about the images causing headaches due to temporal distortion, image stabilization, and other factors? How is the augmented information correlated in realtime with the real images streaming into your field of vision? Will the images being projected into your retina be of high enough resolution to see writing and other informative data crisply? All of these issues and more will need to be addressed before Brother is able to offer a viable product.

Don’t get me wrong – I certainly commend Brother for working to develop such a neat product and I am excited to see where they can go with this. I just think we need to set reasonable expectations for the timeline of their product development. The Hub has reviewed several augmented reality applications that already exist on iphones and elsewhere and even a contact lens concept, and now Brother introduces us to the possibility of wearable awesomeness. The real and virtual worlds continue to collide, but it will still be several years before this collision starts to make some really big waves. In the meantime maybe its time to watch that Terminator movie again – I’m pretty sure augmented reality is not the only part of our future that the movie foretells…

From Petman to Dexter, Bipedal Humanoid Robots Come of Age

From Petman to Dexter, Bipedal Humanoid Robots Come of Age: "

petman-robotWhoa! I am totally blown away by the just released video of Boston Dynamics’ Petman bipedal humanoid robot (check it out later in this post). Bipedal humanoid robots have been in earnest development for the last decade, and there are several pretty solid success stories out there already. But now Boston Dynamics, maker of the famous Big Dog robot, has jumped into the ring in a big way with its Petman. The field of bipedal humanoid robots is literally exploding before us.

With Petman’s ability to withstand a a decent kick or hit from the side while walking it is clear that robots are now capable of balance and control that nearly matches a human on flat terrain. In the next decade we can expect bipedal humanoid robots to conquer more than flat terrain, and also to bump up their speed to full out running. Robots that not only match, but exceed human ability to walk and run in your lifetime? Yes – that is assuming you have another 10, maybe 20 years ahead of you!

First lets just cut to the video and save the commentary for after:

As we can see from the video, the Petman’s walking style and ability is eerily human. Apparently the walking technology from the famous quadruped Big Dog robot has been transferred over to Petman, rapidly accelerating the development timeline for the project. The heel to toe walking style and gait is just like a human, and the robot reaches a respectable speed of 3.2mph. Its the first video of a bipedal walking robot that really has my mind racing, almost scared, that the vision of robot supremacy is racing towards us. Its like the uncanny valley, but for walking instead of for its typical instance of emotion or behavior.

The humanoid m2v2 robot from Bucknell

The only data available from Boston Dynamics about this DARPA military funded Petman is from a website that is pretty sparse on information. Apparently Petman is “anthropomorphic robot for testing chemical protection clothing used by the US Army.” Am I the only one who thinks that is a bunch of PR bullshit? Do they really need to build the most advanced humanoid robot to date simply to test chemical protection clothing? According to Boston Dynamics the Petman robot is slated for completion in 2011. Watching this robot in action, I can imagine a public backlash of fear and doubt creeping in, especially as its abilities dramatically improve over the next 2 years of the project. Perhaps labeling the robot as a “chemical protection tester” is more acceptable to the public than its real label of “badass humanoid robot that can whoop your ass”.

Although the Petman humanoid is awesome, lets not forget some of the other impressive efforts that are also out there right now. The ASIMO, HRP-4C, and Toyota humanoid robots each offer their own solid performance in the field.

Bucknell University last year received $1.2 million in federal funding for research and development of military bipedal humanoid robots. A detailed description of their work is available, and they have released an informative video on youtube. They do have a pretty awesome looking pic of the robot embedded to the left.

Probably the best I have seen other than Petman is the Dexter robot from Anybots, which in some ways, such as jumping, looks to exceed the Petman in capability. Check out these awesome videos of Dexter in action:

From Petman to Dexter, bipedal humanoid robots are on the rise. It is common for people to say that “nothing is happening in robotics” because to the general public these robots are hidden away in the labs with “chemical protection tester” as their designation. Yet the truth is starkly different – robots are advancing at a fantastic rate. The Petman video is one of the more vivid reminders in recent memory. The robots are indeed coming…by foot!

Technology futurists love to talk about the Singularity as the point in time when technology starts to progress so rapidly that machine intelligence melds with and surpasses human intelligence. It is to futurists what the Rapture is to fundamentalist Christians.

Those who welcome or fear this eventuality are gathering this weekend in New York City for the fourth annual Singularity Summit. Speaking at the summit are some of the better-known tech soothsayers, including author and programmer Ray Kurzweil; Steve Wolfram, the founder of the novel search engine Alpha; and Aubrey de Grey, an expert on anti-aging science. Also giving talks are Australian philosopher David Chalmers, whose idea inspired the Matrix film series, and Pay-Pal co-founder Peter Thiel, who has donated in the six figures to the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the organization putting on the event. Last year, the summit drew 1,000 curious academics and entrepreneurs in San Jose, Calif. more>>>

The purpose of this blog is to track and discuss all the new and exciting developments that are occurring in the world that surrounds us.  Too often we don't see progress in certain fields and too often we become complacent with the way the world runs.  However, the technology divide (use to be called the digital divide) is growing.  Living overseas now for the last two years I can tell you that the differences between the have's and the have not's is growing. I am not talking purely financial terms here, but knowledge.  The knowledge gap is growing at a tremendous rate and will cause great friction between people over the next 10-15 years, about the time my children will be graduating high school.

I am concerned, so this blog will help capture this transformation, as it happens, and hopefully help you to understand the technological advances that are taking place today so you can be in "the know" group.
